Question: What are the keys to the kingdom of heaven?

The biblical passage that refers to the “keys of the kingdom” is Matthew 16:19.

Incredibly, Jesus promised his disciples the keys to the kingdom of heaven after he asked them who they thought he was. Peter responded, acknowledging Jesus as Christ, the son of the living God.

It is pertinent to understand that Jesus was specific about what he wanted to do for these people. Many people believe that he was speaking directly to Peter and, hence, gave him the keys to unlock the door of heaven for the Jews. However, we find this extremely convincing since, in Acts 2:14–41, Peter is the main character who spoke on the day of Pentecost.

Incredibly, the kingdom of heaven is God’s abode for all his sons. We know that sons of God have the spirit of God; however, it is clear that Jesus was speaking about the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit, God himself, one cannot connect to God’s abode.

It was, however, imperative for Jesus Christ to gift humanity the one thing they needed to be in line with God. So in John 14:16“Jesus said: And I will pray for the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him; but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you and shall be in you.”

When the disciples were in a dilemma about Jesus’s next action for Israel, Jesus clarified what was necessary in Acts 1:6–8. Jesus enlightened them on what shall make them who he wanted them to be in verse 8: “But ye shall receive power; after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. you…”

At this point, he dragged their minds to the key to whatever humankind needed in God’s abode. In John 3:3, he said, “Unless one is born again, he will not see the Kingdom of Heaven.” He meant that no one could enter God’s abode without the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 15:50 clarifies that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God.

If so, Jesus meant he was about to create a new generation of people with the spirit of God dwelling in them. These are called the children of God.

The contest of binding and loosing in heaven and earth is about commanding things to come to reality and bringing liberation to the universe. Paul explained his encounter by saying the following words in Acts 26:18: “To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.” Mere mortals cannot do such a task. Therefore, those who have received the Spirit of God can only achieve such a purpose. Romans 8:9 made it clear that without the Spirit of God, you cannot be part of him.

It is, therefore, essential to know that the key to the Kingdom of Heaven is the Holy Spirit; only we have everlasting life through that.

We need to know that Christ’s main purpose in coming was to create a breed of his kind who have the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “I am come that they may have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). This life he spoke about here refers to everlasting life only through the Holy Spirit.
